Additionally, the daily version of the Fantasy Baseball Now newsletter will return on Friday, March 29. You’ll receive daily insight on every game from the day before, as well as DFS and gambling advice for the next day’s games, every day in your inbox by 8 a.m. Eastern time.

Here are the projections for Utility/DH-only (just five players), followed by Outfield. Tiered rankings and analysis follows.

UTILITY/DH-ONLY

First Name Last Name AB H HR  RBI SB AVG
Khris Davis 573 141 93 44 114 1 0.246
Nelson Cruz 544 147 85 36 104 1 0.269
Shohei Ohtani 404 113 66 25 73 9 0.280
Mark Trumbo 512 127 69 26 72 1 0.247
Ji-Man Choi 418 105 52 18 66 4 0.251

The only analysis required here is placing these guys in context of the larger draft pool. Davis, currently going in the 40s in the NFBC, is a strong value for us at that point in the draft. Same with Cruz at his current late 90s/early 100s ADP. Ohtani has fallen like crazy in some recent NFBC Online Championship drafts. If he gets past pick 200 and you don’t have your UT spot filled with Davis or Cruz, we’d be all over Ohtani at that point. Even if he misses April, the upside you’ll get for the rest of the five months of the season is well worth the bench spot you’ll use for a few weeks.

Choi is someone to keep an eye on early in the season. He may get first base eligibility quickly, and if he does that while carrying over his late-season power output from 2018, he could be an under-the-radar 30 HR source. The downside is he struggles early and the Rays, with tons of options to play at 1B/DH (Nate/Brandon Lowe, Yandy Diaz, etc.), move Choi to a strict platoon role or outright drop him.

OUTFIELD

Tier 1
1. Trea Turner

Even before news broke of that Nats’ goal to have Turner to attempt 75-80 steals this year, he stood in this tier along with the player who we have ranked at the top of tier two. No other player in the league offers his level of upside in steals and runs scored, and there’s a case to be made to select him third overall if you’re confident you can find cheap power sources at bargains during your draft or auction.

Tier 2
2. Francisco Lindor
3. Manny Machado
4. Javy Baez
5. Trevor Story

Tier 1
1. Jose Ramirez

There’s likely to be some pullback for Ramirez in the power department, but we think he’s the safest hitter in the non-Trout/Betts category. Unless you have a strategy built around a single dominant starting pitcher (likely Max Scherzer) or a single dominant speed source (likely Trea Turner), you have to take Ramirez third overall in any format.

Tier 2
2. Nolan Arenado
3. Javy Baez
4. Alex Bregman

Arenado is a tick above both Baez and Bregman in terms of production, but the multi-position eligibility for the latter two guys help them stay in the same tier as the Rockies star, who no longer has the threat of a midseason trade looming over his value.

Tier 1
1. Paul Goldschmidt
2. Freddie Freeman

We admit our projection might be a tiny bit light on Freeman’s upside in a deep Atlanta lineup. That said, if we were forced to take one of these guys at their current mid-second round ADP, we’ll take the safety of Goldy over the slightly higher upside of Freeman.
